I think what Maxine Waters said -- encouraging harassment -- is complete bullshit.
But that has nothing to do with what I said:
"Political leaders aren't demanding that their followers cut off association with members of the opposite party/candidate under penalty of shunning; the people doing the shunning are doing it of their own accord."
She did not demand that anyone shun members of an opposing viewpoint under penalty of shunning themselves.

It’s anecdotal, but I personally know dozens of people that have told me they have been cut-off, unfriended and otherwise shunned on social-media and in the real world because of different political beliefs. That is, by definition, cultish behavior. - jp1692
Yeah, that is pretty cultish behavior. That being said, it still isn't the institutionalized shunning seen in JWs, Scientology, etc.. Political leaders aren't demanding that their followers cut off association with members of the opposite party/candidate under penalty of shunning; the people doing the shunning are doing it of their own accord.

Are we losing our way a bit at JWN?
by nicolaou infirstly, i want to be crystal clear how grateful i am for jwn.
it's been my place of support for over seventeen years and it's the first online space i direct anyone to if they are taking steps out of the cult.
i am not bashing jwn - i love this place and appreciate the hard work and expense simon puts in to keep it going.

If I could give the OP 1,000 thumbs up, I would. . . . . .
Also agree 100% with SBF. . . there's no such thing as a slow news cycle in WT World anymore. .. more than enough to discuss.

I do not think there is an actual "Cult of Trump." For me, the one thing that all full-blown cults have in common is family/friends shunning a person just because they believe something different or walk away from the cult. That's definitely not the case here.
However, I think this whole idea of the Cult of Trump really springs from Trump himself. It goes back to before the election when he said (something to the effect of) 'I could run out into 5th ave and shoot someone, and not lose a single vote.' Although I'm sure that was hyperbole, the idea that followers/voters would ignore clear signs something is terribly wrong with their leader and loyally follow them regardless. . . . pretty culty.
But then again, it seems like ALL politics are pretty culty. And throw in the media like Fox News or MSNBC who are respectively right and left propaganda machines that (try to) control people's information -- the whole mess looks cultier still.
One of my biggest disappointments waking up was that politics (at least in the US) is utter BS. . . . . oh well. . .

Really good movie.
Honestly, if you sat a JW down and made them watch it, they really couldn't have a legitimate problem with it. Portrays witness life accurately down to the smallest details.

Leah Remini to tackle JWs in new special
by betterdaze inthe star has a previous first-look production deal with the network to produce unscripted series following the success of her emmy-winning show “leah remini: scientology and the aftermath.” according to the hollywood reporter, remini will produce a special for the network during the break following season 3 of the acclaimed docuseries.. it notes that jehovah’s witnesses, while based on biblical teachings, have come under fire over the years for similar practices to the church remini left years ago.
for example, practices of ousting or shunning members who have dissenting views, a blanket refusal to participate in politics and government as well as not celebrating christmas or birthdays are all things that the special will reportedly cover.
additionally, the religion has predicted the literal end of the world several times, obviously to no avail.. .
